In all organizations of our union, in all metropolitan and republican film studios, the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU "On measures for the further development of Soviet cinematography" met with unanimous support and fervent approval. It was perceived by Soviet cinematographers as the ideological and aesthetic basis and practical program for the new rise of Soviet multinational cinematography, which the party and the people expect from us.
Today we can name quite a few paintings that perform their task well and honestly. Here is the temperamental Azerbaijani film "In a southern City", which showed us very acutely how the fear of violating the unwritten laws of the old street, laws that have long been obsolete, leads the characters to clash with the elementary moral norms of Soviet life.
This is the Uzbek film "Without Fear", which tells about how hard and bloody the struggle for the emancipation of women was.
However, such films do not appear very often. Soviet cinematography does not always use its power, its capabilities, to wage an offensive struggle against remnants of the past, against any manifestations and influences of bourgeois ideology and morality.
At the second congress of Soviet cinematographers and at the recent plenum of the board of our union dedicated to the resolution of the Central Committee, we talked about shortcomings and unresolved tasks with the conviction that a sober analysis is absolutely necessary: living art cannot exist without self-criticism.
We are aware that there is a lot of difficult work ahead. It will require an increase in the creative activity of not only cinematographers. In front of the joint plenum, we would like to emphasize our extreme interest in developing, expanding, and strengthening ties and cooperation with all the creative unions represented here. After all, the primary basis of the film is the script. Along with the writers, the success of the film is decided by composers and artists; many theater actors, members of theater societies, play in our films. Cinema is an art in the development of which all creative unions participate, cannot but participate. The comprehensive development of Soviet cinema, raising its ideological and artistic level, deepening its revolutionary traditions, strengthening the role of cinema in communist construction and in the spiritual life of society is our common task.
This task is great, responsible, and honorable. And, thanking the Central Committee of the Party for its constant concern for cinema, we would like from this high rostrum to assure the Leninist Central Committee of our party that the multinational collective of Soviet cinematographers, working in collaboration with masters of literature and all the arts, will spare no effort to successfully develop the most important of the arts, to further enhance the role of cinema. in communist construction, in the education of a new person.
