History & Culture
Maumee is a long-standing center of trade and commerce. The earliest town plat was laid out at the foot of the rapids in 1817 and soon a bustling port had developed as the river became a transportation link between Lake Erie and land to the west.
Archaeological findings show that Native Americans have hunted and fished in the Maumee River floodplains and river for thousands of year. It wasn’t until American colonists began claiming Native American land that the first culture clashes occurred.
